Woman experiencing digital eye strain from too much screen

The Modern Digital Eye Strain

What is Digital Eye Strain?

Hey hey, screen warriors! Do you know what digital eye strain is? You might be experiencing it without knowing! Also known as Computer Vision Syndrome, it is an eye condition related to prolonged use of digital devices. Excessive screen time for extended periods may lead to eye discomfort.

Digital Eye Strain Symptoms

Looking at digital screens often makes the eyes work harder. Many of us might be susceptible to developing digital eye strain due to long screen time. Common symptoms include:

  • Dry eyes
  • Strained or tired eyes
  • Burning or itching eyes
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Headaches
  • Neck or shoulder pain

So what are some causes of digital eye strain?

1. Lack of eye breaks

It’s an unavoidable fact of modern life – we rely on technology to live, work and play. From the moment we open our eyes, our eyes are working hard till night, screens after screens. To make matters worse, we often fail to take eye breaks when we are too engrossed with our devices, such as during work, gaming or even binge-watching shows. It’s no surprise that our eyes are dry and tired!

2. Blinking lesser than normal

As we stare at screens, we often blink less than usual, causing the eyes to dry out and blur our vision. Blinking helps to moisten our eyes to prevent dryness and irritation.

3. Computer display settings

Viewing screens with the wrong brightness, text size, contrast or colour temperature can cause your eyes to work harder. Eye strain may also occur when the lighting in the room is too bright or dark as compared to your screens as the contrast can intensify eye strains.

Other causes include using digital devices too near or too far from your eyes, poor posture breaks during digital usage, having an underlying eye problem or being stressed / fatigue.

Now that we know how digital eye strain can be developed, here are some tips for prevention:

1. Remember to blink and take screen breaks

Let’s practice screen mindfulness. Digital eye strain often occurs when we look at screens for a prolonged period of time without a break. Try to make a conscious effort to blink and become aware when you’re not blinking enough.

Try the 20-20-20 rule: for every 20 minutes on digital devices, look into a distance 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Be sure you balance out your screen activities with other outdoor activities with natural light if you’ve spent the whole morning working on a computer too! Simple walks out for lunch or shifting your focus away from digital devices works. Little break counts!

2. Eye drops

Eye drops are a great remedy for dry eyes. As we focus on our screens intensively, we forget to blink, resulting in dry and irritated eyes. Artificial tears lubricate and provide temporary relief for your tired eyes.

3. Right lighting

We know that it’s hard, but do avoid using phones on your bed, or after you switch off your lights. Poor posture or bad lighting requires your eyes to work harder to focus!

Adjust your screen brightness, colour temperature and contrast of your digital devices according to your surroundings. If not possible, make sure you’re viewing your digital devices in places adequately lit and adjust the brightness as needed. You don’t want your devices to be brighter than your surroundings! Glare can also contribute to eye strain, so try to avoid or reduce glare on screens.

4. Keeping your eyes healthy

Besides following these tips to prevent digital eye strain despite long screen hours, simply staying healthy can go a long way as well! Look into your diet to ensure you have the proper nutrients required for healthy eyes.

Remember, eye health starts from within. Get your essential vitamins Lutein & Zeaxanthin through a food approach first. Green leafy vegetables, such as kale, broccoli and spinach are great sources of lutein.

However, we often do not get enough eye nutrients from our diet. Lookafter Digital Eyes gummy vitamin is a great eye booster for your precious eyes in this digital age. These bite-sized treats contain Lutein & Zeaxanthin to filter blue light and reduce oxidative stress on your retina, building on your natural eye protection.

You may think digital eye strain is not a severe issue that requires our attention yet. However, when we engage in activities with too much blue light, it may be harmful to our eyes in the long run.
